where's the worst trash in nwa? want to do saturday cleanups

so this is kind of random but i've decided i want to spend some weekends just picking up litter. i walk my rescue pup along the trail down by Johnson most mornings and i'm tired of stepping around fast food bags and busted bottles and then doing nothing about it. figured if i'm out there anyway i should bring a bag.

where are the worst spots you all have noticed? i'm thinking creeks, trail stretches, roadsides, anywhere stuff piles up. i've seen a lot along the Scull Creek and Mud Creek trails and around some of the I-49 underpasses, but i'm sure there's way worse that i just don't drive past.

also, are there groups that already run cleanups around here that i could tag along with? i'd rather join something than wander around with a trash grabber like a weirdo, though i'm willing to be a weirdo. i have gloves, a few buckets and a lot of free saturdays now that the weather's finally decent.

thanks in advance, and if you know a spot that's just gross, send it my way.

Welcome, Alyssa, and thank you for doing this. Most of us walk past that stuff and never do anything about it.

Keep Fayetteville Beautiful is the group I'd contact first. They've organized creek and trail cleanups for years, and I believe the city will lend out supplies for volunteer efforts, so check their pages for the next dates. It's much easier to start with a crowd than to go solo.

One safety note, since you mentioned the I-49 underpasses. Please stay off the highway right-of-way and ramps. Pick up on the trail side, and bring a friend if you go near the road. Broken glass near creek banks is another reason to keep those gloves on.

Also, the streets near campus can get rough the Sunday morning after a Razorback home weekend, if you want a spot that always needs help.

Let us know how the first Saturday goes.
